Crown Candy Kitchen
Opened in 1913 by Greek immigrants Harry Karandzieff and Pete Jugaloff in St. Louis's Old North neighborhood, Crown Candy Kitchen is the oldest operating soda fountain in the St. Louis metropolitan area. Now run by the fourth generation of the Karandzieff family, it is nationally known for its thick hand-spun 24-ounce malts and housemade chocolates crafted from over 500 antique molds. The restaurant's famous Five Malt Challenge — finishing five malts in 30 minutes — is one of the oldest documented food challenges in the United States.
