Dickey's Barbecue Pit was founded on October 15, 1941, by World War I veteran Travis Dickey and his wife Miss Ollie in Dallas, Texas, originally operating out of a bar where Travis smoked meats in a pit he built himself. Now in its third generation of family ownership under CEO Laura Rea Dickey, the chain is the largest barbecue franchise in the United States and world, operating in 44 states and nine countries. The original Dallas location on Henderson Avenue is designated a Texas Treasure Business and holds the distinction of being the oldest continuously operating restaurant in Dallas that has never changed location, name, or ownership.
