Fentons Creamery is one of America's oldest continuously operating ice cream parlors, founded in Oakland in 1894 and famous for handcrafting small-batch ice cream daily from fresh, hormone-free cream. Melvin Fenton is credited with inventing Rocky Road ice cream during the Great Depression, and the Black and Tan sundae remains a signature, while the Banana Special was named the #1 Top Dessert in America by The Food Channel. Fentons gained international fame as the inspiration for the ice cream parlor scene in Pixar's 2009 film Up.
