Founded on February 21, 1951 by Robert O. Peterson in San Diego, Jack in the Box is one of America's original fast-food chains and a pioneer of the drive-thru format, with its early model now commemorated at the Smithsonian Museum of American History. The chain — operating over 2,100 locations across 21 states — is as famous for its unlikely signature deep-fried tacos, added to the menu in 1954, as for its burgers, selling more than 554 million tacos per year.
