La Tejana was founded in 2019 as a pop-up by Ana-Maria Jaramillo, daughter of Colombian immigrants raised in McAllen, Texas, who craved the breakfast tacos of her youth. The concept grew from apartment-stoop sales to a brick-and-mortar in Washington DC's Mount Pleasant neighborhood in 2022, with the signature '956' taco — named after the Rio Grande Valley area code — featuring homemade flour tortillas, refried beans, cheesy scrambled eggs, and house-made queso. La Tejana has earned three Michelin Bib Gourmand awards and won Favorite Fast-Casual Restaurant at the 2025 RAMMY Awards.
