Mama J's Kitchen
Mama J's Kitchen opened in 2009 in Richmond's Historic Jackson Ward neighborhood, bringing the soul food recipes of Velma 'Mama J' Johnson — learned cooking alongside her mother and grandmother as one of fourteen children — to the public. The family-owned restaurant has been named one of Thrillist's '50 Restaurants to Try Before You Die,' a James Beard Outstanding Service Award semifinalist in 2019, and the best restaurant in Virginia by Martha Stewart Living.
