Slaps BBQ was founded in Kansas City, Kansas, in June 2014 by brothers Mike and Joe Pearce, whose competition BBQ team, Squeal Like a Pig, earned a runner-up finish on Destination America's BBQ Pitmasters in 2013. The restaurant sold out within hours on opening day and continued selling out daily for its first three-plus years. Still active on the KCBS competition circuit, Slaps placed first in the 2022 American Royal for chicken and is ranked among the top restaurants in Kansas City on TripAdvisor.
