Sushi Taro opened in 1986 in Washington DC's Dupont Circle neighborhood, originally converted from a Chinese restaurant by the Yamazaki family. Under brothers Nobu and Jin Yamazaki, who took over in 2003, the restaurant underwent a major renovation in 2008, transforming into one of the city's most authentic Japanese dining destinations with a focus on kaiseki and omakase experiences. Sushi Taro received a Michelin star in the inaugural Washington DC guide in 2016 and was ranked among Forbes Magazine's top 36 restaurants in the US in 2012.
