Tsunami Restaurant and Sushi Bar was founded in 2002 by sushi chefs Kris Bodeen and Scott Coulter, opening their first location in Salt Lake City's Sugar House neighborhood with a mission to expand Utah's culinary palate through creative Japanese cuisine. In 2009, Tsunami became the first restaurant in Utah to stop serving bluefin tuna, and the chain has since grown to five locations, earning recognition for Best Sushi and Best Upscale Casual Dining in Utah.
