Clyde Cooper's Barbecue is one of North Carolina's oldest continuously operating barbecue restaurants, founded on New Year's Day 1938 by Clyde Cooper in downtown Raleigh with just fifty dollars in startup capital. The restaurant specializes in Eastern North Carolina-style vinegar-based barbecue and has been recognized among the top 10 barbecue restaurants in America. Notably, Clyde Cooper was among the first Raleigh restaurateurs to welcome all customers through the same door during the era of Southern segregation.
