La Casa del Tamal was founded by Cristina Olvera, who immigrated from Hidalgo, Mexico to Utah in 1999 and began making tamales from her home kitchen before growing into a celebrated multi-location restaurant. The family-owned operation built its reputation on award-winning tamales, birria tacos, and dishes rooted in Hidalgo traditions, and was recognized by Salt Lake Magazine as a 2024 Best Restaurant and ranked among Utah's Top 20 Restaurants. A downtown Salt Lake City location in the Post District now pairs the kitchen with an Azúcar Cafécito Bar and handcrafted cocktails.
