La Taqueria
La Taqueria was founded in 1973 in San Francisco's Mission District by Miguel Jara, a Tijuana native who trained in Mexico to perfect carnitas before opening the restaurant using his mother's hot sauce recipe. The restaurant is widely credited with creating the Mission-style burrito — distinguished by its lack of rice, generous meat fillings, and griddled-to-crispy exterior — and in 2014 FiveThirtyEight named it the best burrito in America. In 2017, the James Beard Foundation honored La Taqueria with its America's Classics award, recognizing over four decades of quality, local character, and lasting community appeal.
