Highlands Bar and Grill is Birmingham's flagship fine dining destination, opened in 1982 by chef Frank Stitt, who blends French haute cuisine techniques with fresh, regionally sourced Southern ingredients. The restaurant won the James Beard Foundation's Outstanding Restaurant award in 2018 after ten consecutive years as a finalist, the same year pastry chef Dolester Miles won the James Beard Outstanding Pastry Chef award. Stitt was also named James Beard Best Chef: Southeast in 2001, earning him widespread recognition as a godfather of Southern cuisine.
