Gates Bar-B-Q is a Kansas City barbecue dynasty founded in 1946 by George and Arzelia Gates, tracing its culinary lineage directly to Henry Perry, the father of Kansas City barbecue, through pitmaster Arthur Pinkard. Under Ollie Gates, the business grew to six metro-area locations, pioneered bottled KC-style sauce for national retail distribution in 1983, and was inducted into the American Royal Barbecue Hall of Fame in 2021. Known for its enthusiastic 'Hi, may I help you' greeting and iconic Struttin' Man logo, Gates remains one of the city's most enduring Black-owned restaurant institutions.
