La Oaxaqueña opened in San Francisco's Mission District in 2008 with a mission to bring authentic regional Oaxacan cuisine to the Bay Area, specializing in dishes rarely found elsewhere in the city. The menu centers on handmade tortillas pressed to order, traditional tlayudas, banana-leaf tamales, grasshopper tacos, and mole negro made with black chocolate — a sauce traditionally served at Oaxacan weddings. The late-night diner-style restaurant has earned a loyal following for its unpretentious, home-style cooking and community-driven atmosphere.
